Here are just a few thoughts on the aftermath of last weeks events and the loss of W.O. Patrice Vincent, and Cpl. Nathan Cirillo. There has been a lot of commentary about how these events herald a loss of innocence. I hope that this is not the case and firmly believe it wont be. You can see it in the reaction of Canadians and their outpouring in equal parts, kindness and resolve. Yes, there may need to be some changes to security practices in and around Parliament Hill - the lessons learned from any incident such as this. And, it is fair to say the nature of threats and risks against public places and institutions is not fixed in time. It is always a shifting landscape from which security practices must adapt and address in order to protect the safety of employees, visitors, and Parliamentarians (in this case). Last week demonstrated our values and pride of country in their full splendour. Lets not have anything take that away. But, in the age of internet-inspired criminality, the agencies that protect us need the tools to do so. I am certain we can strike the right balance between liberties and protecting public safety. Surely there will be more discussion on how we best achieve that balance in the weeks and months ahead. In the meantime, well be carrying on with the memory of this past week, its tragedy and its recollection of Canadas finest qualities.
