Here are just three of the countless vices that Jesus came to liberate us from: 1) The penalty of sin: In an extreme act of love, Jesus paid for our sins—past, present, and future— on the cross. Let’s celebrate our freedom from the penalty of sin. “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” —Romans 8:1 2) Attempts to “measure up”: On the cross, Jesus exchanged our track record (broken) with His (perfect), making us entirely new creations. Life is no longer about what we do, but what Jesus has already done. Let’s celebrate the freedom from trying to measure up. “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” —2 Corinthians 5:21 3) Fear: The most used phrase in the Bible is “Do not be afraid.” By having a loving relationship with God, we can trust that he will work all things in our lives for “our good and his glory” (Romans 8:28). We can take risks and be bold, knowing that our identity is secure in Jesus. Let’s celebrate the freedom of the tyranny of fear. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” —Joshua 1:9 This Independence Day, let’s reflect on the freedom of our souls.
