Here are my favorite movies of 2014 in the order in which they were released. In my opinion this year was way more entertaining than 2013 for movies! 1) The Lego Movie: As a fan of legos growing up, I thought this would be a horrid cash grab like the other toy based movies. I was really surprised how creative and self-aware the movie was. Keep in mind this is directed from the guys from the “Jump Street” movies, so its pretty funny too. 2) Captain America: the Winter Soldier: Such an incredible action movie! While Marvel still doesn’t have the guts to kill off characters, it was pretty surprising how brutal some of these action scenes were. You could almost feel/hear every punch! 3) Only Lovers Left Alive: Incredible performances from Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston (Loki). I liked this movie a lot because you could pause the movie almost at any time and it would be a perfect background. It is just a really well shot, modern, and moody vampire movie. 4) Snowpiercer: Class warfare almost reminiscent of a Bioshock game. While the special effects are a bit cheesy at times, I found the story and creativity of the movie to be really entertaining. 5) Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Two words - Andy Serkis. That guy makes an animated ape more of a realized and believable character than most of the humans in that movie. Also there are apes on horseback with machine guns in this movie; that just makes sense! 6) Boyhood: I’ve literally never seen a movie like this before. Seeing these characters grow up in real-time was pretty amazing. Plus all the cool cultural references were fun too. 7) Guardians of the Galaxy: Probably the most fun I had in the theaters all year. In fact I’ve seen this movie 3 times this year. Plus the soundtrack is just rad! 8) Gone Girl: The shock value alone from this movie was incredible. The less you know, the better! Rosamund Pike was amazing in this movie. Director David Fincher (Fight Club) is awesome as usual too. 9) Interstellar: Christopher Nolan, YES. Best original soundtrack of the year by Hans Zimmer. YES. McConaughey. YES. Seriously, this movie is pretty awesome. I think this might be Nolan’s most ambitious film yet. After a second viewing I think this movie works on almost all levels. 10) The Interview: This was a toss up between the other Seth Rogen movie, Neighbors, but in the end I had to go with the Interview. This movie has a lot of very subtle jokes that I think the critics didn’t catch. For example, in one scene James Franco is casually dressed in a freaking Joker suit! Also this movie took a lot of risks that most comedies don’t normally take. I’m very glad that Sony decided to release this on VOD, despite probably making less money.
