Here are my notes from the board meeting on Tuesday. Two days at the beginning of the year will now be training days instead of student days! Board Notes 06-17-2014 Good evening, my name is Albert Trudel, I am the President of VVTA. President Kirkland, School board members, Superintendent Lopez, colleagues, and community members, I am honored to be speaking with you tonight on behalf of Val Verde Teachers Association. Tonight I would like to talk to you about the great collaboration and transparency I saw in a district in Maryland, and how I see us going in the right direction. Montgomery County Unified School District and their unions work hand in hand to create and guide curriculum, create new systems for the district and assure that the district is going in the right direction. Each of the stake holders there assume that everyone there has honorable goals in mind for the District and their constituencies. I see us going that way, especially with some of the items on the agenda tonight. Most teachers are stressed and worried about the new curriculum and Common Core State Standards. Our district is supporting implementation by presenting for your approval a calendar approved by teachers, administrators and classified. This new calendar will create time for all of our employees, classified and certificated, to be trained and better prepared for the new school year. I thank everyone involved for working together to do what is right for the students and employees of our District. In an effort to address school board member concerns and facilitate positive dialogue about issues affecting our District, certificated staff, teaching and curriculum; we are going to religiously hold our monthly coffee with School Board Members. We will make sure to email the board if there are any pressing issues that would better support our students and employees. I see great things in store for our District’s future as we continue to work together to celebrate our successes and work through our challenges. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak.
