Here are some comments posted on a post in a CH kitty group regarding the spay/neuter surgery for CH cats. There are people who will argue that ketamine is ok. IT IS NOT, ITS A HORSE TRANQ. That being said the quicker they can get her done the better. A good Vet shouldnt take more than 15 minutes for a spay. Ask them to make sure they use the isoflurane gas, dont keep her under longer than necessary and minimize the pain killers. CH cats dont think theyre different and they can feel pain, its a bodys way of saying dont do that. They also tend to over-groom in some cases. Keep and eye on her when you get her home. Good Luck! At the risk of repeating myself and getting my comments pulled from the page again, Ketamine is like a bad LSD trip. CH cats are already somewhat disoriented and so giving them a medication that adds to that is not a good plan. Additionally they seem to have (for no specific reason) a very hard time processing it out of their systems. They stay out of it for a long time afterwards. Honestly I work with a Vet and we prefer not to use it on small animals at all The reason it is used is because its effects are quick and its cheap. Gas alone is stressful to the pet and also exposes the staff to it. A protocol recommended by a neurologist for my own ch kid was dexdomitor and hydromorphone as premeds, induction with propofol, and maintenance on iso. CH kids already have a brain not wired quite right. Ketamine is a dissociative drug. Not good for a CH brain. It has also been suggested that using other medications like valium in conjunction with ketamine work better, they do not on CH cats. A small dose of valium prior to admission and then gas works best. Used properly the masking of an animal should not expose any humans to the gases unless youve got your face next to it. Close to conclusion of the surgery the gas is turned off, supplemental oxygen is administered and the animals come around better without the hangover and psychotic behavior associated with ketamine. If anyone else knows anything about any of this (facts/experiences) please share them!
