Here are some ideas for Words to Say When You Don’t Know What to Say, when a friend or loved one is under job pressures. God says that the work we are given to do is a gift from Him. (See Ecclesiastes 3:12-13.) But what if that doesn’t feel true, due to a conflict with a coworker or boss, a devastating job loss, or tiring hours? How can you encourage friends and loved ones when their jobs are not a source of joy but of stress? Here are a few ideas: 1. Send them a Someone Cares card, gently reminding them that worrying doesn’t accomplish anything. Write 1 Peter 5:7 for them as a beautiful reminder: “Cast all your anxiety upon Him because He cares for you.” 2. Ask what they need. It might be something simple, like meeting for lunch during the workday, having a phone conversation, or sending frequent notes of encouragement to boost their spirits. 3. Tell them about a fascinating article you read, funny television show you watched, or a great new novel to help them to get their minds off of their troubles. 4. Share this truth: no matter how dark their situation seems, it’s not dark to the Lord (Psalm 139:10–12). 5. Encourage them to do something for someone else—make a meal for a new family at church, volunteer at a local library or hospital, or commit to pray for someone every day. 6. Let your friend or loved one know that they have your support and listening ear. Find your own joy in the gift—and job—of being an encourager!
