Here are some notes from the message today on money with Pastor Rich. “The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it.”(Psalm 24:1) “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income.” (Ecclesiastes 5:10) “If anyone teaches false doctrines.… He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy … and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.” (1 Timothy 6:3–5) “The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” (1 Timothy 6:10) “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ ” (Matthew 25:23) “Do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:31–33) “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” (Luke 16:10–11) “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:19–20) “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ ” (Hebrews 13:5) “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” (Psalm 20:7) “They gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God’s will.” (2 Corinthians 8:3–5) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21 (NIV) Jesus replied, You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. Matthew 22:37-38 (NLT) BRING - What has God given to you, and give that back to God. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test! Malachi 3:10 (NLT) Abraham brought the tithe some 430 years before the law was written and set a precedent for all those who are “Abraham’s seed” (Galatians 3:26-29). “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things. Matthew 23:23 (NLT) Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine. Proverbs 3:9-10 NLT “A poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.’ ” (Mark 12:42–44) “My God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19 NIV) SAVE/ PAY OFF DEBT Proverbs 6:6-8 Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. Proverbs 21:5 nlt The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage, but everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty. Proverbs 21:20 The wise man saves for the future but the foolish man spends whatever he gets. * Why You Shouldn’t Save – is there reasons not to save? Don’t Save Out of Fear 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that “God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” Don’t Save Out of Arrogance and Pride Proverbs 18:11 The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety. Don’t Save Out of Selfishness or Greed Proverbs 23:4 Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit. Ecclesiastes 5:5 It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it. Proverbs 17:18 It’s poor judgment to guarantee another person’s debt or put up security for a friend. Proverbs 22:7 Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender. Romans 13:8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have.” (Hebrews 13:5) SPEND Luke 14:28-30 28 “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? 29 Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. 30 They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’ 1 Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come. GIVE Why Should Christians Give? Giving as an Act of Worship Giving as an Act of Love Giving to Develop Character 1 Timothy 6:18-19 says “Command them to do good, to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life” 2 Corinthians 9:7 “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” “ ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.” (Matthew 19:21–22) “Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?’ ” (Matthew 16:24–26)
