Here are some of my notes for the Clay RLC meeting tomorrow night. For the last time, It is Wednesday the 12th at Ronnies on Loch Rane. This is the old location for Opies in Orange Park. Kingsley becomes Loch Rane, you just make a right at the Publics on Blanding, Ronnies is in the back of the shopping center. The meeting will begin at 7:00 I’d like to give you a short presentation to show just how much trouble Americans is in. I’m sure everyone has heard of the term “American Exceptionalism,” politician love to use that phrase, that’s a vote-getter in conservative politics, but what does “American exceptionalism really mean? I prefer the explanation that “America is exceptional because of it’s freedoms.” That’s going away. We have a Bill of Rights, on paper. I understand that to be a list of things that the Federal government cannot do to it’s citizens. Actually they can, they have been doing so, and often they hide from us the fact that they have given themselves the power to violate our civil rights. The really big issue that recently came to light is the NSA scandal. I’m not sure of the extent to which Americans are being watched but the government does seem to be collecting a staggering amount of information on it’s citizens. Some have gone so far to say that the government is collecting virtually everything on cell phone and internet communications to include e-mails, social media, bank records, credit card purchases, everything. While you would think that would be impossible, the fact is the government isn’t going to tell you the extent of what they are doing so you really don’t know. We have been told in the past that if you’re not doing anything wrong then you have nothing to hide, the picture that is now arising is that if you do fall under some sort of suspicion that they have such a massive amount of information on you that they can find something if they want to, even if it’s something coincidental. Say you made a few remarks on facebook, and had a phone conversation with the wrong person, or traveled out of country or made a large bank withdrawl at the wrong time. The more they know about us the more potential legal jeopardy we’re all in. In addition we are all under increasing amounts of video surveillance, which can include facial recognition software, a smart phone can track your location, there are plans to increase the number of drones in American skies, it really does come close to the level of electronic surveillance found in the book 1984. Americans are supposed to have a free press, the media is supposed to tell people what their government is doing and so act as “watch dogs of democracy.” Investigative reporting into classified government activity is now becoming dangerous, as we have seen a fox reporter investigated for espionage and phone lines at the associated press being monitored. They have been described as having a “chilling effect” on investigative reporting. America recently saw two massive manhunts by law enforcement, one in California, the other for the Boston Bombings. In each case you saw a militarized civilian police force, the imposition of virtual martial law, and warrantless searches. Getting into conspiracy theory, some people believe that in both cases there was very little evidence the suspects actually committed the crimes. In California the suspect was killed, in Boston one suspect was killed in custody and the other is unable to speak. In addition we have irs targeting, federal takeover of healthcare, crippling federal regulation on some industries while other industries seem to write their own regulations, a titanic federal tax debt, and a number of other issues. What can we do about this? You’ll have to come to the meeting to find out.
