Here are some practical tips to get up for Qiyām Layl. 1. Intention (but you already knew that, innit) 2. Determination. Sacrificing your sleep is not easy and it requires much determination to be consistent. 3. Repentance. Sufyān al-Thawri said, Dont disobey Him during the day and you will be able to worship Him during the night. I was forbidden from passing qiyām for 6 months b/c of a sin I was committing. The sins can keep you asleep. 4. Kick the bad habits. (ie staying up late on twitter, watching tv/netflix, etc) 5. Sleep early. This is one of the easiest ways to get up for qiyām (aside from making duā for it) 6. Take a nap during the day. 7. Go easy on the basto/biryani/burgers! If you eat heavy, it will be more difficult to get up. 8. Understand that it is only Allah who wakes you up. No alarm can do what He does so make duā to Allah to wake you up. 9. Read about the merits. Just praying one rakat grants you the status of ad-dhakireen. Huge rewards that we are missing out on! 10. Make it a family affair. We speak of wanting to be with our families in Jannah but do we put our words into action? Make the effort. I didnt begin to love qiyām until I saw the love my brothers had for it. Waking up at all hours of the night to their recitation & qunoot I began to question why I didnt love it.
