Here are some tips to prevent water damage from frozen/burst water pipes during extremely cold days. 1. Purchase a Pit Boss Water Alarm from Dry-Mark with temp sensor that sends you a Text message if : a. There is water on your floor b. There is a power outage c. The temperature dips below 40 degrees. Messages are sent through Verizon Network. This system is extremely reliable and proven to work. 2. Do not ever shut off heat to save money on gas unless the water is shut off at the main and drained. Winterizing would be recommended too. (This can be a hazard on real estate transactions too) Houses shouldnt have active water service unless they have heat. 2. If you travel and nobody will be home, shut off and drain your water lines at the lowest point in your home. 3. Water lines in an outside wall can be a problem.
