Here are the reports I actually wrote from the weekend, as you will see not really what the Diss Express printed!! NORFOLK ALLIANCE PREMIER DIVISION Saturday 29th June Diss 207-10 (14 points) North Runcton 188-8 (12 points) Diss hosted North Runcton at Rectory meadow om Saturday looking to continue their good run of recent form. Skipper Simon Cooper lost the toss and Diss were asked to bat first on a damp wicket following the persistent rain the previous day. Openers Simon Cooper and Mark Williamson got off to a steady start before Williamson was the first to fall, trapped LBW by the impressive Nalaka. This brought the in-form Phil Squire to the crease and along with Cooper, Squire steadied the innings until Cooper fell caught behind via the inside edge for a well-made 35. Squire looked impressive throughout his innings and built significant partnerships with Wilby (15) and Rob Tooke, who made an impressive 39 from just 35 deliveries. However, when Rob Tooke was dismissed with the score 156-4, Diss lost several wickets in quick succession. Squire continued to play very fluently, making his second successive half century, until he fell for an excellent 74 when looking to up the run rate. This left the lower order to push the total past 200 to gain the extra batting point and the innings came to a close when Germon (7) was run out in the final over, with Diss having made a very impressive 207 all out, especially given the tricky batting conditions at the start of the innings. Although Diss knew this was a competitive total, an impressive display with the ball would be required. West made the all-important early breakthrough, clean bowling Marslen for 6. This brought Seneviranth to the crease who played in a very attacking manner, with the Diss bowlers struggling to find control. However, the introduction of spin, and in particular Mark Williamson, was to be the turning point in the game as North Runcton went from 60-1 to 100-6. Williamson deceived the batsmen with a series of flighted deliveries to rip the heart out of the opposition’s batting line up and return excellent figures of 5-36, assisted by some fine catches in the deep from Dawson, Wilby and Squire. At 100-6, Diss were firmly in the driving seat, though opposition skipper Allsop had other ideas and played a fine captains innings (57*) and along with the lower order, pushed North Runcton towards the Diss total. Chris Cooper (1-38) and Robbie West (2-24) both took important wickets towards the end of the innings, though Diss could not prevent North Runcton from gaining 90%, finishing on 188-8 and in doing so gaining 3 extra points at the expense of the home side. Diss will reflect on some errors in the field, which ultimately prevented them from pressing on for the win. However, having lost the toss, Diss will be pleased to have gained 14 points from an excellent game of cricket and enjoy a well-earned mid-season break next week, with no 1st XI fixture. Diss MoM: Mark Williamson ---------------------------------------------------------------- On Sunday, Diss made the lengthy journey to Ingham to face Norwich in the quarter finals of the Carter Cup. Diss lost the toss and unsurprisingly Norwich chose to make first use of an excellent wicket in the blazing sunshine. All of the top 6 Norwich batsman made starts, with F. Sutton (50), Mattarazo (68) and Blake (83) particularly impressive. Diss stuck to their task admirably in the field, using 9 bowlers in all, with Jody Sparrow (1-50) and Rob Tooke (2-50) impressing early on, whilst Will Dawson (2-20) and Mark Brawn (3-14) formed a lethal partnership towards the end of the innings, which with the assistance of a run out from Chris Cooper, reduced Norwich from 293-4 to 311 all out. Diss were determined to play some shots in their reply to ensure they kept up with the required run rate on a wicket offering increasing assistance to spin bowling. Simon Cooper (27), Rob Tooke (61) and Tom Davey (23) were the top scoring Diss batsmen, with the latter particularly impressing with some lusty blows in his first innings in the Carter Cup, whilst Rob Tooke batted in his typically aggressive manner, striking 3 sixes in his stay at the crease. Unfortunately Diss lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 160, with F. Sutton the pick of the opposition’s bowlers, finishing with excellent figures of 7-47. Diss MoM: Rob Tooke
