Here are the reports from last weekends matches. Wirksworth & Middleton Cricket – 12 July 2014 Division 3 W&M 1st XI 247-5 (27 points) beat Denby 2nd XI 97 all out (2 points) by 150 runs This was a very good performance indeed from W&M: their first maximum points win of the season and one in which every player contributed. While Denby may not be the best team in the division they had, in fact, won their previous two matches – their first victories of the season – with maximum points in both. Put in to bat the 1sts made a lively start with 36 in decent time before two wickets fell at the same score. A third made it 63-3 by which time Liam Murphy, continuing his good form, was batting fluently. Jack Allen joined him in a stand of 53 featuring crisp boundaries and alert running between the wickets. When Murphy went for 33 Ant Woolley and Allen then added 85 to take the score past 200. After Allen departed for 45 there was still time for Stuart Poplar, playing against his former club, and Woolley to plunder 46 more runs from the final five overs. Woolley finished on 94 not out; a chanceless master class of how to build an innings. After tea the bowlers set to work aided by enthusiastic and energetic fielding. Sinethemba Mjekula took the first two wickets in a lively spell of seven overs (2-11): Max Marshall, his first bowl for three or four weeks after injury, took a wicket as did Stephen Lowe. Allen, after his batting efforts, now starred with the ball. He bowled seven overs of spin to finish with 4-13 in tandem with Woolley who took 2-6 from four overs. For Denby, an U16 player, Ben Buckley, top-scored with 26 and looks to be a very fine prospect. W&M move to second place in the table. Grateful thanks to Margaret Potter for sponsoring this game. This weekend the 1sts visit Derby Congs on Saturday while on Sunday they entertain Holmewood CC in the cup semi-final. Division 6N Ambergate 2nd XI 153 all out (4 points) lost to W&M 2nd XI 154-3 (27 points) by 7 wickets This looks to be a comfortable win for the 2nds: in fact they were made to work quite hard to achieve it. Ambergate having won the toss chose to bat first, somewhat surprisingly perhaps, which is why W&M gained 27 points for the win instead of 22. The home side will be disappointed not to have made more runs. At 145-5 after 32 overs they seemed set for a score of 200 at least. Before that Neil Doxey had pouched yet another outstanding slip catch and Ian Peacock, behind the stumps, had effected an excellent stumping to remove the dangerous Adam Bannister for 36 and an equally good catch to dismiss former W&M favourite Paul Thompson for 46. That 145-5 became 153 all out in just three or four more overs. Liam Duffy, with another fine spell, took 4-23; Doxey and Jacob Bradbury took two wickets each while Jack Ritchie and Joe Bradbury had one apiece. In reply W&M (with 55 overs to score the runs) lost an early wicket in a cautious start but built steadily after that. Ritchie was out for 34 when the score was 90-3 with David Greatorex remaining a reaasuring presence at the crease. An injection of urgency was then provided by Peter Ashurst. He hit an unbeaten 35 from just 23 balls as the 64 runs still needed took just 10 further overs. Greatorex was 45 not out as the 2nds achieved the win in 44 overs. Division 8N W&M 3rd XI 187-4 (22 points) beat Denby 4th XI 183-7 (6 points) by 6 wickets This was a fine win for the 3rds. After successive, demoralising defeats to teams below them in the table, a very well marshalled performance exacted revenge for a crushing loss to Denby earlier in the season while also inflicting a first defeat of the summer on the visitors. On an excellent Middleton pitch Denby’s Paul Kay, 34 David Cherry, 39 and Michael Bott with 51 scored the bulk of the runs. For W&M Beth Harwood and Lewis Heap each took two wickets and Mike Whittall, 1. Captain for the day Keith Williams bowled a very tight spell when Denby were looking to accelerate and all the bowlers were well supported by keen ground fielding and catching along with two smart run-outs. 183 has been a daunting total for the 3rds at times but with Whittall strengthening the batting the target was reached with six or seven overs to spare. He scored a fine 82 and Heap made 25. At the end a decent stand saw Matt Daldorph, a gritty 20 not out in the face of some pretty fiery bowling, and the evergreen Andrew Redfern, 29 not out, guide the team home. For Denby Gary Foulke took three wickets.
