Here are the show me / tell me maintenance questions that you will be asked any TWO of before your driving test: Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil. Identify dipstick / oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the minimum/maximum markers. No cuts and bulges on sidewall, 1.6mm MINIMUM of tread depth across the central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked. Manufacturer’s handbook, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps. Show me how you would check that the headlights & tail lights are working. Operate headlight switch (turn on ignition if necessary), walk round vehicle (6 bulbs). Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working. Operate hazard warning switch and check functioning of all indicators (6 bulbs). Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car. Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone to press pedal while you check (3 bulbs). Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only). Check is carried out by using control (usually either side of drivers’ airbag). Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey. Engine off, steering is tight, when engine is started, steering goes light. Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear. Demonstrate by applying parking brake that when it is fully applied it secures itself, and is not at the end of the working travel. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey. Static test: Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Moving test: Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side. Show me how you would change between high and low beam headlights, explain how you can tell if high beam is on. Turn on headlights, move column switch to change beam, Blue warning light on for high beam. Show me how you would turn on your rear foglight, descibe when you would use it. Turn on headlights, press rear foglight switch. Use only if visibility falls below 100 metres. .Show me how you would check your headrestraint for correct adjustment. Should be roughly level with top of your head, and close to it. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your ABS system. Warning light stays lit on dashboard. Show me how you would set your demisters to clear all your windows. Turn heating controls to blow warm air onto windscreen. Turn on heated rear screen, consider Air-Con if fitted.
