Here are two issues that really hit bulls eye with me. The post by Petra Akinti Onyegbule and the comment below by Mustapha Abubakar. Please read. What I find most disturbing in the whole of this is the role of the black African man, who, from all reckoning has not been chosen: Not a single of the prophets was selected from among us; not a single of the religious verses was revealed to one from among us; not a single of the chosen languages is from among us. Even more disturbing, it will appear that the Abrahamic religons have long considered being black as being a curse. We have heard and read of verses sanctioning the acquisition of our women as slaves and in some other instances where erring subjects were cursed with being black. But, let me even step away from the spiritual racism which has been committed against the black man and come down to the physical one. Why does the average black man find it difficult to understand that these chosen people actually see themselves as superior to him/her and that no amount of glorification or fraternising will lead to redemption? OK, we have imbibed all of this and --depending on which side of the Niger one was born-- we have come to identify with at least one of these religions, the question that still gets me agitated is how have these changed our indices of success, happiness and morality? Are we any happier? What I see is brother pitched against brother, families torn apart, communities pitched against one another, strife and mutual suspicion all on account of religious differences. Are we more successful than the rest of the world (or than those who have refused to imbibe these)? Isnt the answer to this readily glaring? We are the most backward of all races. Today, as I write this, we have thousands of children who will die because they cant find food to eat. Yes, food!! Are we more morally upright? Are we less corrupt, wicked, uncouth or backward than the rest of the world? Are we now more compassionate than those who are without these Abrahamic religions? of course, not! I often wonder how a society can thrive on large scale hypocrisy and pervasive unthinking; and if as an individual you feel that youve had enough of this hypocrisy and you want to say it as you see it, subjects who fail to understand where you are coming from ostracise and castigate you for nothing. When I see folks who look like me (and nothing like an Arab or a Jew) bickering over religious superiority (and hating me for my name, lol) what I feel is a combination of anger and pity. Angry at how anyone can be so stupid and pity for they know not what they are doing. They are the ones who need deliverance as I cant imagine how hellish it must be living with such a mediocre mindset. Sadly, not even the educated can be absolved from this tomfoolery.
