Here are two little clips showing Sean Hayes doing sabre drills, both a solo exercise , as well as partner practice . Now, both foot work and weapon performance differ from medieval swordsmanship, but I want to direct your attention to the training of precision. Compare which body parts move first when action is initiated. You should notice a small but crucial difference between instructor and student (see the second clip here: ) – a detail many of us have to work on a lot. Sean says: The students are still working on perfecting their hand-foot timing. This is one of the most difficult aspects of swordsmanship to master: most activities in our daily lives, in many sports, and even in many martial arts as taught, do not use or emphasize closely coordinated hand-first foot-second timing. Such timing is absolutely essential to properly engaging the body to support the action of hand and sword. Its an aspect I work on carefully with my students and continue to discipline myself to. But I must say I am pleased with the progress of my students: Georgia has been studying for just a year now, and Chris has recently returned after a couple of years focused on his family. https://youtube/watch?v=LbEK9b3kFgw&feature=youtu.be youtu.be/4sujw5XQcd4
