Here at DFW Scanner, we strive to inform as well as educate. We use a lot of medical and public safety jargon on this page and at times (and rightly so) there is confusion. A majority of the public is not well educated on these terms and when used here on the page, it creates confusion. One such term we used this morning was Mass Casualty Incident. As Wikipedia states, A mass casualty incident (often shortened to MCI and sometimes called a multiple-casualty incident or multiple-casualty situation) is any incident in which emergency medical services resources, such as personnel and equipment, are overwhelmed by the number and severity of casualties. A lot of followers who are not familiar with such medical terms misunderstood the meaning and automatically assumed casualty meant death. Casualty can mean injury OR death. So a mass casualty incident is simply an emergency where several patients require medical attention. MCIs can range from car accidents with 6 people injured to terror attacks with hundreds and even thousands injured. So, we were correct in labeling the bee incident at Highland Middle School this morning as a mass casualty incident. We are sorry it created confusion. In the future we will try to post such events as Multi-Injury Incident/Mass Casualty Incident to avoid any confusion. As always, thanks for following. A1
