Here comes the Progressive Democrats for slow learners! Lucinda Creighton has today announced that she is to launch a new political party to save her political career and the careers of a handful of other former Blueshirt TDs. When you cut through the waffle and spin that accompanied the announcement it is clear that the ideas behind Creightons new party arent very new at all. Thirty years ago another group of right-wing establishment figures (including Mary Harney and Des OMalley) launched another new party call the Progressive Democrats. Like Lucinda the PDs championed the cause of deregulation and the free market. And twenty-five years later we saw the results of what happens when you deregulate the banks and leave the provision of housing to the free market. If you go back even further in Irish history you will find that the same right-wing policies prevented the distribution of emergency food supplies during the Great Hunger because it would interfere with the free market (and the profits of the landlords and traders). Lucinda Creightons brand of politics have failed the people of Ireland for generations. They have delivered nothing but inequality and disaster. Lucinda Creighton is using the hashtag #rebootIreland for her new party. We suggest the people boot her and her failed politics to the kerb.
