Here is His Excellency, Dr. Girma W/Giorgis speech at the Press Meet: Good morning dear media friends! I’m so delighted to have these nice moments with all of you. We are here to share with you the glad news about one of our major feats in connection with the World Environment Day 2014. As all of us know, the World Environment Day (WED) has been observed throughout the world under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme. Since 1973, 5th of June in every year, is dedicated to think and act for our Environment. The day becomes a source of ideas every year for redeeming Mother Nature through more prudent, sustainable and effective means. Each year the WED would uphold creative ideas and slogans. This year, the slogan is ‘Raise your voice, Not the sea level’. This slogan is adopted by the UNEP in due recognition of the alarming concern the world has, upon the fate of small island nations across the world. It is imperative that a slight change in sea level can pose serious threat to the living and nonliving members of small, tiny islands. World over, 52 small island nations have been identified by the United Nations as being threatened by the rising sea levels. Cape Verde, Comoros, Mauritius, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles are the Small Island Nations surrounding Africa. They are all low lying coastal countries demanding our prompt care and attention especially in the wake of changing climate world over. Ethiopia doesn’t have a sea shore. Geographically, we are landlocked. Yet our hearts are wide open for this world cause. The message of the slogan, ‘Raise Your Voice, Not the Sea Level’ is well understood by our countrymen. Every then and now, our Nation is also receiving lessons of agonies caused by fluctuating climate conditions. Hence we have got a concrete stand for mitigating the challenges faced by humanity. Borders are manmade. But we should not forget that everything remains on the bosom of Mother Nature which has no borders. Unless we care her, the bounties of today won’t last for tomorrow’s generations. Hence the need for setting aside our narrow minded notions of religion, creed, politics, region, country and fight the challenge with a broad mind and bold heart. Environmental conservation is rooted on the ideology: “Think globally, Act locally”. Dear friends, today, I am so glad to inform you that Micro Business College, ably led by my best friend, young, energetic, Mr. Abera Tilahun, is acting exactly according to the above said wisdom. Mr. Abera and his College is joining that massive global mission for containing the global warming and seal level increase. They are planning to express Ethiopia’s profound love, affection and concern for the mighty Wenchi Crater Lake. Their idea is to encircle the lake with a gigantic human chain formed by [thousands of] people on the World Environment Day that falls on 5th June. Enthusiastic participants – males and females of all ages – would join their hands forming a human chain around the lake and shout slogans of the Day and take Pledge for saving the Wenchi Lake. The event is held within the very limited financial resources of the Micro Business College, except the huge passion for environmental conservation Mr. Abera and his colleagues have. An event of this mammoth sort, for the cause of environment is held for the first time in the country. Perhaps an event of this nature is held for the first time in the world, too. Dear friends, now I request all of you to kindly showcase this meaningful action before the world with due importance. Any publicity on your medium would definitely provide necessary goodwill, encouragement and moral support for this admirable feat. Hence I once more request all of you to give maximum publicity for the event at all possible avenues. I expect your gracious reciprocation. Thank you so much!
