Here is Silvia Elena Diaz, the first of what will surely be thousands of expectant mothers who will benefit from the newly constructed maternity clinic in El Hormiguero. This facility, which was inaugurated on the 10th July, 2014, was built thanks to the hard work of Bridges to Community, the Ministry of Health, the local Mayor´s office, North American donors, as well as community members of El Hormiguero and its many surrounding communities. Silvia (wearing the green and white top), is typical of those who will benefit from the maternity clinic, coming from a remote community only accessible by foot or on horseback. Silvia arrived at the maternity clinic on the 22nd July after a difficult nine hour journey from her community, Aguas Verdes. She is 23 years old, and has been advised to be resident in the maternity clinic until she gives birth, which should be some time in late August. Silvia was experiencing complications with her pregnancy with strong fears that she would lose her baby. The mother-to-be, who is expecting her third child, has now received assurances that her pregnancy is progressing well following an ultrasound test in the Siuna hospital, but will remain in El Hormiguero for the rest of her pregnancy. Here she receives visits from medical staff based in El Hormiguero, meals, and attention from students from the local Martin Lutero University. As you can see from the photos, Silvia is very comfortable in her new surroundings and appreciates immensely the attention that she has received. BTC is equally extremely grateful to those who made this possible!!
