Here is a Morsel posted by Alton Howard on September 1, 2005 in the aftermath of Katrina. " A Morsel For the Road by Alton Howard" “Anchor of Faith” “Will your anchor hold in the storms of life?” so wrote Priscilla Owens in 1874. “When the clouds unfold their wings of strife? When the strong tides lift and the cables strain---will your anchor drift or firm remain?” We have an anchor that keeps the soul steadfast and secure while the billows roll. Fastened to the Rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.” How fitting are these words for children of God in times like this week in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews reminds us of the power of faith of our brothers and sisters in ages past. “Some face jeers and flogging while still others were chained and put into prison. They were stoned, they were sawed in two…they went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted…they wandered in deserts and mountains, in caves and holes in the ground.” And furthermore we are told...”We are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses and we need to…fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame…” (Heb. 11:36, 12:1-3) We have seen these past few days lawlessness and actions of those void of conscious, as they have brought about more destruction and havoc, while marching to the beat of Satan’s drummer. The storm is over, the water will recede in time, and the clouds of fear will be lifted. Faith will still be shining and doing its deeds of love---a bit tired and shaken, but strongly secure. Yes, Priscilla, the anchor holds! “Take up the shield of faith”, Paul wrote, “with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” (Eph. 6:16) “The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress, and my Deliverer.” sang King David, “My God is my Rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my Shield and the Horn of my Salvation, my Stronghold.” (Psa. 18:2) You can’t get an anchor like that at any marine shop! The genuine has the imprint of nail-scarred hands. Jesus is the way. He knows the path and is the eye in the storm. The blessing of victory does not depend upon my strength to hold on but upon Jesus’ strength who holds me. Faith anchored in Him will hold! “…no one can snatch them out of My hands”, Jesus said in John 10:28. Alton
