Here is a biog for Steve Cole if youve not heard him before. Currently one of the resident DJs at Ronnie Scotts in Londons infamous Soho district, you can find Steve Cole spinning Jazz Funk Soul anthems at the legendary clubs Funky Nation nights. Like most DJs, Steve started by putting on his own nights in Maidstone, Kent while at Art College. I was 19 years old and mad about James Brown, Roy Ayers, Stevie Wonder, but it was at at time when Acid House had exploded, so I had to put on my own nights to hear the music I loved, says Steve. His next move was quite a leap. In 1994, with partners Curly CJ and Baby Browning, he ran the much-loved Sunday Soul Affair at the legendary Blue Note. The club in Hoxton Square was the catalyst for the amazing regeneration of that area. When we first started the session at the Blue Note, Hoxton was a very rough place. All of our mates cars had their stereos nicked while they were at the club, but they still came back every week!. The Alldayer style session attracted many guests at the top of their game - Bob Jones, Jazz FM DJ Ralph Tee, Terry Jones and Andy Davies from the Southport Weekender Acid Jazzs Eddie Piller - even Gilles Peterson used to pop in to listen to what was going on. Steve then became a resident at the Jazz Cafe in Camden, playing there so often that if you went to a gig at the venue from the late 1990s to the mid 2000s, you almost certainly heard Steve on the decks. Two residencies at Centre Point venue Point 101 followed - Optimistic with old mucker Curly CJ and Pure Soul with DJ and recording artist Snowboy. At the same time Steve found time to hold down another DJ residency at The Rocket, a huge Northern Soul Allnighter in North London which featured the mighty Ian Levine and Ralph Tee. A gig Steve is particularly proud of is a deep Soul night, A New Chapter, at SMERSH - a tiny venue in Shoreditch. Working alongside two DJs with amazing rare Soul collections - Mark Houghton and Gareth Donovan - Steve helped to build the midweek club session up from an audience of one to packed to the rafters full of swaying (no room to dance!), singing, soul fans. Who said small isnt beautiful! Another quirky gig Steve enjoys is his residency on the London Soul Cruise - a floating party on the most famous river in the world, The Thames. As well as playing tunes in London, Steve has enjoyed regular stints behind the decks on the Home Counties Soul Alldayer scene, DJing at events such as ChiSoul in Chichester and Swansong in Chertsey. Steve has compiled two compilation CDs - Love Vibes and Love Vibes Too and re-edited the Gregory Porters 1960 What? for a special vinyl release on Expansion records with Ralph Tee. Expect anything from 70s Modern Soul, old funky 45s, underground disco, unexpected classics to shiny soulful dance and beyond when Steve is on the decks
