Have a GR8 day everyone!!! “Table Top Drummin’” Written by: Ralph Williams & Jermaine Layton This is an original song that was inspired by a concert that my wife, Louanne and I attended. It was held at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and the group performing was The Eagles. Every one of the 16,800 seats had been sold and there wasn’t an empty seat in the house. There was a special buzz in the arena that night. Everyone waited with great anticipation for The Eagles to take the stage. And then, the lights started to dim, the musicians started taking their places on stage and the buzz in the audience had grown to a deafening roar. Then, all at once, it was pitch black and there was a dead silence that seemed to linger for about 30 seconds……………………………. Then BOOM! In one nano-second four very bright lights were focused on Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit, and a driving, almost contagious beat sent nearly 17,000 attendees into a common motion of movement as The Eagles began a most memorable evening. For nearly two hours the Eagles had the people in their audience dancing, playing air guitar, pounding out beats on the backs of people in front of them, smiling and roaring their applause of approval as if everyone there was at a special reunion. Not many knew each other, but at the same time everyone there knew everyone there. It was as if we were at more than a reunion, it was a communion. This was a night to remember. It was a night that bonded strangers into a small community, singing as if we were all in the band called, “The Eagles.” We were experiencing the ride of a lifetime and all we could hope to do was hold on! Before we got back to our hotel I was already writing words on a napkin. By morning, I had the lyrics written and a format on paper. When we returned home to Texas, I went straight into my studio and laid down a very rough recording of this new song. It was a very basic piano track, guitar track, bass track and drum track. Then I laid down a rough vocal track. I asked Louanne to give it a listen. As I watched her reaction, I knew I had a winner. Still, I was missing something. I didn’t know what, but I knew it needed more than I was giving it. So, I put it on the back burner for a while. I shared the song with my music director, Jermaine Layton, and ask him if he would help me with my vision for this song. I explained everything to him, played him my original rough recording of the song and said, “OK Jermaine, Can we make this a great song together?” This is important; Jermaine is slow to smile when he is thinking something over, but very quickly I watched a big smile grow on his face. When I saw that, I knew we were going to complete writing and arranging this song together. I also knew it would be a challenge. My goal from the start was to capture in a song all of the feeling, observations, thrills, joy, community and fun that we experienced with 16,798 of our closest friends. I’m really proud of “TABLE TOP DRUMMIN’”, and I hope that no matter who your favorite group is, this song will take you back to the time you got to see your favorite band.
