Here is a definitive answer to all those who scream that this nation is not a Christian nation because many of the founding fathers were deists. This is what the left seems to be incapable of understanding. Deists ARE Christians, just a different branch, like Protestants and Catholics. Oh, but they did read the Bible, and especially the NT. They studied it in its original languages as they did the philosophers of all ages, many in their original languages. They were extremely well read and thoughtful men, most of whom also worked with their hands and close to the soil, so they knew life from the ivory towers down and from the brown earth up. And they knew people. .. Washington was also a leader of men as a surveyor and farmer, and in the military. He, more than any of the others, was a man of the people, by his very nature as well as by his experience. But he was never common. .. In their later years, Adams and Jefferson, separately and each unknown to the other, developed the custom or arranging NT verses quoting the words of Jesus into their own little guide books, reminders and testaments to carry about with them.. . . . . Deist, simply, at that time, meant they believed God the Creator put man on the earth to learn, to experience and to triumph by his own efforts, with little interference from God and the angels. But they also believed that He sent prophets and revelators as guides and teachers, and that He Sent Jesus to redeem those who failed the tests of mortality by suffering all the sorrows and hurts and pains men cause themselves by their weak and evil deeds (aka, sin). . . .They believed that all humans were born with certain God given rights and responsibilities. Where they parted from most other Christians was in the degree to which, they believed, Deity intervened in the affairs of men. Their belief was that it was minima. Many Christians believe that such intervention can be and often is almost constant. Many are in between. . . To claim the Founders of this nation were not religious because they were largely Deists betrays a lack of understanding of their deep abiding faith that mankind is created in the image of his Creator, and that, as His sons and daughters, they are destined - if they do not ruin it in rebellion - to become His heirs in all things.
