Here is a jpeg of a file I made in Adobe Illustrator to show that type can look a lot like low-brow sign painting of the sort I like best: on paper. When folks gripe about vinyl signs, many of them seem not to actually know for sure that the sign *is* made of vinyl lettering. They instead seem to be reacting to other things like bad layout, unsophisticated spacing, sterile type, garish colors, etc. This sample may look like vinyl, if only the borders are scrutinized. However, the lettering is meant to resemble fast, fluid, commercial brush lettering such as one might have seen 60-80 years ago on signs in the window of a small butcher shop. (Think of the kind lettered by an older, experienced, sign painter in a loose and sloppy manner.) Hope you like this post, Darla Dee Hagensick.
