Here is a letter that I wrote to the writer of this article published in the NZ Herald. Apologies about the grammar and punctuation, It was just written at 10pm ... I hope it has some good points in there.... We need to start voicing our displeasure at sensationalized misleading media and look at issues from all angles...ANYONE INTERESTED IN SETING UP THE PEOPLE S MEDIA COMPANY??? Hi Marilynn, First of all i would like to state that I am not a member of Destiny Church and have never been a member. I do have a few friends who do attend the church. This is in response to what I think is an attitude of our media here in NZ. Which is the unfair use of media to help skew the views of subjects to readers thereby using their influence to pull general public to one point of view. I see this in our news stories, radio and frequently in the NZ Herald. Instead of using media to inform the public and help them make better choices in life you have given us 10 points about why we should marginalise a small group based in south Auckland and its somewhat eccentric leader? Usually I would read articles or media releases and then have a rant to my wife or even a harmless post on Facebook or twitter about how I feel. When I read through your article mentioned I felt a strong sense to speak up against what I think is unfair and biased journalism. I am not criticizing your writing but only the focus and subject of as you say 3000 people(Destiny Church) and their Leader. Why has the media chosen to highlight and focus on Brian Tamaki, yes he has made some outlandish claims in the name of his faith and has required some not so socially Normal practices in his congregation but I think the media attention is slanderous to say the least. How many crimes has he committed against our countries laws? How many drug houses has he operated how much has he actually STOLEN from the poor or in fact anyone? We can speculate that he has put financial pressure on his congregation but we must remember they choose to give. Their are more dodgy salesman and crooks to be pointed out with more reason to than Brian Tamaki. If we applied the same kind of media focus, scrutiny and investigation used against Brian Tamaki/ Destiny Church to investigate outer cultural groups, organizations or heaven forbid the NZ Herald...it would be amazing to see what we find. Why dont you go down their on Saturday and see for your self or go and spend a year with him then write a great article or even a book! I do in no way want to offend you but simply point out what I think are unjust views in the NZ Media. It was interesting to read your article on 10 TED talks. It is almost total opposite in its nature to what you have pointed out about Brian and his 3000 or so followers. This clearly shows the NZ media biased and almost elitist view. These TED talks promote the same or similar ideal to that of Destiny or the church. Which begs the question....does it matter what it looks like or is saving lives and empowering people the end goal? 10 TED talks 1.
