Here is a little information on our soloist for the first concert of the season, David Shin, cello. David Shin has appeared as a soloist with the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, the Daegu Philharmonic, and the Phillips Academy Symphony Orchestra. He has won awards at the local and national levels. While studying in Vancouver, David won the Kay Meek Scholarship, the highest prize of the Vancouver Academy of Music, and placed third in his age category at the Canadian Music Competition. During his time in Massachusetts, David won second prize in the Brockton Symphony Feinberg Youth Competition, and he was one of the winners of the Phillips Academy Senior Concerto Competition. An avid chamber musician, David won second prize with his piano trio at the Canadian National Music Festival. David has spent his summers attending music festivals in Europe and North America. He has recently attended the Banff Centre for Music and the Arts in Canada, the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival in Italy, and the Chamber Music Institute at the College of the Holy Cross. David has performed in master classes for Steven Isserlis, Johannes Moser, Jian Wang, Maria Kliegel, and Aldo Parisot. David has studied with Joseph Elworthy at the Vancouver Academy of Music, and with Jan Müller-Szeraws at Phillips Academy Andover, graduating from Phillips Academy in 2014. David currently studies with Yale School of Music faculty Ole Akahoshi while enrolled in Yale College. David has published a scientific paper on crystallography, won awards for high school journalism, and is currently enrolled in the freshman Directed Studies program at Yale University.
