Here is a lovely little video of a total eclipse shot by Australian James McHugh. I have always felt that the basic education of every single child should center on awakening this sense of wonder in pure observation of the natural world. Every child is born with this native curiosity, but it is more often subverted with whimsey than cultivated as a core competency. Why should the magnificence of reality be left to a few intrepid naturalists? Imagine a world full of Carl Sagans and Charles Darwins! I suspect it was never easy to foster a society based on open insight, and now that industrialized materialism, theistic religion, and over-population are destroying the planet, I fear the window has closed forever on that possibility. If you stop the video at 2:35, you can see numerous sun spots erupting on the surface of the sun. A major solar flare could decimate human civilization at any moment. That is just how tenuous our puny existence really is. It appears increasingly likely however that we will extinguish ourselves long before the sun does! Such is the nature of Samsara.
