Here is a message from the Lowndes County EMA office - Here are the latest graphics put out by the NWS in Tallahassee referencing the hard freeze that is expected tonight and tomorrow morning. Fortunately we are not expecting any precipitation and the air is fairly dry so we are not anticipating any freezing condition on local roads and bridges. However, even though we don’t expect the roads to freeze it would still be a good idea to be extra cautious when driving tomorrow as puddles from irrigation systems, busted pipes, etc. could leave standing water on roads and sidewalks and any water will likely freeze. Just pay extra attention when traveling and walking in and out of buildings to avoid any accidents. You can see from the graphics that the low tonight is expected to get down as low as 23 degrees and wind chills could dip as low as 13 degrees. This creates a dangerous situation for any persons, pets or plants that are left outside and exposed to the harsh temperatures. Since we don’t get hard freezes like this that often it is important to remind everyone to protect any exposed pipes to prevent them from freezing and busting. Also make sure to bring plants and pets indoors as they will not likely survive outside with temperatures dropping so low for such an extended period of time. This is also the time when we tend to see a rise in the number of fires due to heating appliances. Make sure that if you use an electric or gas space heater to keep warm that you keep it away from furniture, curtains, clothing and any other combustible material to prevent accidental fires. I know a lot of people like to use small heaters in the office or their personal workspace. Make sure that these are turned off and well away from anything that could potentially catch fire before leaving for the day. Lastly, anyone that does not have adequate warm shelter for the night can go to one of the Lowndes County shelters listed below to get out of the cold and have a warm, safe place to spend the night. Grace Fellowship Church aka Fellowship House (Both Men and Women) 1304 W Hill Ave Opens at 6PM Salvation Army Emergency Shelter (Men Only) 317 Virginia Ave Opens at 6PM New Horizons Shelter (Women and Children – Men accepted but they must go through Salvation Army first) 714 Charlton St Open 24 hours
