Here is a method of mounting 5mm white LEDs for headlights in locos. I cut a piece of 1/4 ID PEX water tubing about 3/4 long. The tubing is relatively soft and can be cut with a utility knife. Then I wrap a turn of black friction tape around it (so it wont be visible through the windows) and hot glue it in place. Then the 5mm LED is a nice slide fit into the tubing. This way the shell and the chassis can be easily separated.
