Here is a question I have been wondering about. Many philosophers have supposed that logic is a constraint on rationality. But can logic itself be defined in terms of such constraints? Such a definition would seem to make logic inherently normative (whatever that may amount to). Barring such a definition, we might instead say that logic is merely a theory of entailment or consequence, only describing what follows from what, but never telling us what we rationally ought to believe. Is this an ill defined dilemma? Is one side right? Is there some kind of synthesis?
