Here is a question to put out to Secrets of the Reds hunting - TopicsExpress

Here is a question to put out to Secrets of the Reds hunting community. What do you think about this experience. Q. Gday mate, a quick question. I saw a red stag yesterday that was in hard antler. I was surprised to see him in hard antler at this time of year. I mainly hunt sambar and havent specifically targeted reds before. Later in the day and within about a 10km radius we saw a another mob of reds but they were still in velvet, any thoughts? A. Thanks for your question. I have never seen a mature red stag in hard antler at this time of year, only in velvet. Spikers occasionally fail to cast their antlers while maturing. Not knowing your area: it could have been a skinny sambar or a rusa deer though both have a similar three-point antler structure you would know. Cant think of any other interpretation except that in thick brush dark velvet antlers can appear hard. One hunter I knows claims that old red stags occasionally fail to cast their antlers, though I am unaware of evidence for this claim.
