Here is a quote from a yoga teacher as to why martial artists use abdominal breathing. In martial arts, “belly” breathing is done because the aim is the cultivation of the lower vital force for combat. Here are 4 more accurate reasons. 1) In threatening situations, deep abdominal breathing with slight tension in the abdomen allows you to shift from the reactive sympathetic nervous system response (flight or flight) to the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system promotes relaxation, lowering of the pulse, slowing of respiration and the conservation of energy. 2) It allows superior oxygen exchange in the lungs resulting in improved muscle performance during activities requiring maximal effort, which increases endurance. 3) Keeping the breath low in the abdomen automatically keeps your center of gravity low for improved physical as well as mental balance. 4) IT KEEPS YOU FOCUSED AND IN THE PRESENT. :-) So, abdominal breathing can be used for the cultivation of the lower vital force for combat but that is not necessarily the aim.
