Here is a response to a great question a parent asked about a recent article I posted about parenting. How do you enforce consequences for behavior (reap what you sow) without that leading to mere behavior modification? A: You talk to your children about how their behavior or actions is connected to the condition of their hearts. That doesnt mean there arent consequences for their behavior, rather you dont correct with consequences alone which only leads to short-term change. By addressing the condition of the heart, you introduce them to long-term change. That way they learn that their heart motivates their behavior and can address the root of their actions instead of just providing consequences alone which only deals with the fruit. Because consequences dont last or work forever. But a transformed heart leads to permanent behavior modification.
