Here is a short video on teaching mice to walk backwards. This is a great example of what is called shaping a behaviour: starting out small (in this case, asking the mouse to slightly move back), then gradually increasing the criteria (taking one step back, then two, etc.), until you have the final behaviour you want (walking backwards several feet). You can apply this technique to almost any training you do with your pets. What sorts of behaviours have you shaped with your pets?
