Here is a summary of my sermon from this past Sunday. I wrote this with the different thoughts on prayer that members shared. What is prayer? Is prayer the words we learned from our childhood? Table graces like - “God is great, God is good..., or bedtime prayers like, “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep...?” Is it words we repeated, a thousand times in unison, from the liturgy of our churches? Is it a feeling deep down inside of us, something that words fail to describe, yet, somehow want to give verbal expression to as to capture it in a picture? Is prayer found in the hurt we feel, the anger we express, the joy we experience, the loneliness we live with, the despair we suffer through, or the grief that darkens our days? Is prayer like the first rays of light of that greets the new day or is it like the brillance of the stars dotting the night sky, filling us with us awe and wonder? Yes, it is and it is something more, though we may not know how to offer it back to God. Prayer is the very breath we breathe, filling our lives with the sacred, and exhaling it, giving it back to the One who gives us life. Prayer is the silence, when we sit alone, listening without speaking, and become aware of the Divine Presence who is with us, knowing us, intimatley, in ways we do not even know ourselves. Perhaps the best prayer is one that we learn to pray without words, that comes to us in the newness of the rising sun, the heat of the noon day, or as the dusk of another day settles upon the land; a prayer felt in the face of death and in the joy of life. It is a prayer prayed without words, lifted from the depths of our hearts, woven together in a tapstry of emotions and experiences from each living thing, that ties us to all faiths and traditions, and then in unison, given back to the One who is the unspoken sacred Word that lives in us, through us, and among us, even today.
