Here is a thought which is entirely too heavy for a Friday evening in May. Institutional religions are NEVER about individual enlightenment, personal atonement or inner peace. Religions are, by definition, about community organization. From the beginning of human civilization, such has been the function of every religion. Notice I did not deny that individual enlightenment, personal atonement or inner peace may sometimes be found through religion. However, the primary purpose of any religion is not to get you to paradise; it is to connect you with a community of other human beings right here on Earth. I doubt any catechism exists where this fundamental article is mentioned, but it really should be. That kind of transparency might save us all a great deal of confusion and disappointment.
