Here is an everyday example of how we train animals for their meals. Suki and Murray (blue-fronted amazon and greenwing macaw) are very heavily bonded and caged together. Because of their living situation behavior issues can arise. By this I mean they will dive-bomb people they are unfamiliar with, lunge at hands they are not comfortable with, and Suki will not let people go to certain areas of the room without dive-bombing them. So, the more we get them out of their cage and train them, the more we see these behaviors change. We encourage interaction inside and outside of their cage. We make it worthwhile to them to want to interact with us. The more we do this, the more they show behaviors of welcoming us into their lives and their cages. We do not want to separate them because they clearly enjoy being with each other and they clearly show signs of high anxiety when being separated by force so we just dont do it. Here is an example of how we train them for their breakfast. I am calling Suki to my hand and reinforcing Murray for calm behavior as he watches her fly away from him and being returned to the perch beneath him.
