Here is an example of how DAP tries to mislead the Rakyat and generate hate. Chong Zhemin is DAP Perak Economic Development Bureau chief and political secretary to the Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming. Yesterday, Chong issued a statement urging PM Najib of not betraying the peoples trust and to retract the decision for petrol price hike, and immediately announce a price reduction of petrol in line with the current international oil price which is declining. Chongs zombie reasoning is that international oil price has fallen to the lowest in nearly three years and cited that when Malaysia increased our petrol price by 20 sen yesterday, the petrol price in the UK and India was reduced by 5 pence (27 sen) and 65 paise (4 sen) per liter respectively - hence making the petrol hike in Malaysia all the more ironic. The ironic one is you, Mr Chong, and makes me wonder if Chong is trying to protect his master, the Taiping MP from paying more money every month for his Volkswagen, Estima and Volvo 4WD luxury cars which he keeps garaged in his Ipoh White House. But somehow Chong forgot to mention that the price of petrol in the UK was UK£1.34 ( RM7.07) per liter and 81 rupees (RM4.28) per liter respectively - compared to the RM2.30 per litre price in Malaysia. It is good that Chong mentioned these two countries so that zombies cannot use the argument How much UK salary? How much Malaysia Salary - dollar for dollar mah. So, how about India? Their salary lower or higher than Malaysia? Chong also mentioned that with possible 6% GST on petrol, Malaysia could end up paying RM2.44 per litre for RON95 - hence a double whammy. Again Chong also did not mention that petrol in the UK and India are subjected to 20% VAT/GST already way higher than Malaysias projected 6%. Chong needs to understand that UK and India are able to reduce the price of petrol in line with market price BECAUSE UK and India are not subsidizing petrol price and already paying above market price for petrol due to the various taxes on fuels in those countries. This is the fundamental difference - India and UK are taxing petrol and fuel instead of subsidizing fuel like in Malaysia - therefore, if Chong wants us to follow the examples of UK and India, I am sure PM Najib would be more than happy to oblige and tax and price petrol like those countries. A little known fact is that on top of UKs 20% VAT on petrol, UK also imposes various duties on petrol that makes it so much more expensive. This was known as the Fuel Price ‘escalator’ introduced in 1993 and was a way of the government making money and also to help protect the environment by discouraging people from using their cars. In fact, more than half of the price of fuel in the UK is tax and duties paid to their govt. If Chong really wants Malaysia to follow the world and increase/reduce petrol price in line with world oil prices, then it is time for Malaysia to follow the world too by not subsidizing petrol price and taxing petrol.
