Here is an excellent letter to the editor from a home support worker! Home care workers deserve more pay Telegraph-Journal, May 17, 2014 I have been a home care worker for 13.5 years. When I first started in 2000 my hourly wage was $7 per hour and today Im only making $11.50 per hour. We are like every other dedicated and loyal employee. Even though we are never guaranteed 40 hours a week we are required to have the proper training. That training cost $1,100, and we pay for that ourselves. We are supposed to receive a regular increase in wages over four-year period. That so-called raise is $0.25 per hour this fall. Thats an insult. I am concerned as the health care system is not looking promising on our end. The seniors depend on us each day. It helps them keep their dignity and enables them to stay in their home instead of going to a nursing home or hospital which will cost the govern ment more money. The seniors worked hard all their lives and deserve not to be forgotten. Mr. Alward, you too may be walking in their shoes in the future. Shame on you and others who choose not to take steps to improve our situation. We, in this province, are the lowest paid for home care for seniors. We are doing the same job and have the same required training/courses as every other province, yet the New Brunswick government chooses to keep us underpaid. We are taxpayers and have been so disappointed and insulted that the government has ignored us for so many years. I hope voters rethink who should be re-elected or elected to represent them, and remember broken promises to those trying to make a living in home care. I would also like to thank Kris Austin for the recent commentary speaking on our behalf. Lori Caissie Home care worker for Minto Services to Seniors
