This photograph of the Hilltop Garage was taken around 1960. Bill Griffith and his brother Charles, who sold Studebakers in Brownsville during the 1940s and early 1950s, switched to selling Fords in the mid-1950s. The Griffiths moved their Ford dealership to the Hilltop Garage around 1959 from its former West Brownsville location, where it had formerly been Herbertson Ford and then Horton Ford. The move became necessary when their West Brownsville building was condemned by the state in order to reconstruct an intersection and expand Route 40/88 into a four-lane highway leading out of West Brownsville toward California. Bill Griffith’s reminiscences of living and doing business in Brownsville are shared in the soon-to-be-released book: LOOKING BACK: The Best of Glenn Tunney – Volume Five. Volume Five will be the final book in the 1,500-page LOOKING BACK collection, which features local history, plenty of nostalgia, and more than 500 historic photographs of the Brownsville area in the “good old days.” ..................................................................................................................
