Here is an interesting chart demonstrating how and approximately when humans developed various major religions. It bears a striking resemblance to the tree of life first proposed by Darwin and still used to illustrate biological evolution, albeit far less complicated. Like organic life, religions share a common ancestor and most forms eventually go extinct. Just as we are all descended from fish, we are all descended from animists, some of whom still practice the worlds first religion. Also, it has been claimed (falsely) that there are no atheists in fox holes. However, I would hazard a guess that there were no atheists among the first humans, our animist predecessors.
