Here is another report of success from social media/online petitions: This is about the control on sale of acids that the government has announced. Laxmi writes: We won! Two days ago, the Government announced that it wants to regulate and control the sale of acid in India. In the last 7 days, I mobilised over 27,000 people through my Change.org petition urging Home Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, to curb the sale of acid in India. This public support along with my case in the Supreme Court has put pressure on the Government to act. Along with two other acid attack survivors, I delivered my petition to the Home Minister on 15th July. A day later the Government announced that they would regulate the sale of acid in the open market. If the proposed guidelines are implemented, shopkeepers will need a valid license to sell acid and the buyer should produce a valid identity card and address proof. I am sure this will reduce the availability of acid to those who will use it for attacking women. This is a great victory; But there are hundreds of people who seek justice for various issues in India. Sasi, do you know of an issue of injustice or violence against women? Now is a great time to take action. Like me, you too can make a change by starting a petition and gathering public support.
