Here is another story Jesus told: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a farmer who planted good seed in his field. But that night as the workers slept, his enemy came and planted weeds among the wheat, then slipped away. When the crop began to grow and produce grain, the weeds also grew. “The farmer’s workers went to him and said, ‘Sir, the field where you planted that good seed is full of weeds! Where did they come from?’ “‘An enemy has done this!’ the farmer exclaimed. “‘Should we pull out the weeds?’ they asked. “‘No,’ he replied, ‘you’ll uproot the wheat if you do. Let both grow together until the harvest. Then I will tell the harvesters to sort out the weeds, tie them into bundles, and burn them, and to put the wheat in the barn.’” - Matthew 13:24-30 NLT Wouldnt it be great if the only people we had to be around were other believers? We wouldnt have to worry about what we would have to see or hear. We wouldnt be tempted to do the things that non-believers do because we wouldnt be living next to them, watching them appear to get away with it. We wouldnt have to choose between good and bad, right and wrong, or self and others. But that is not Gods plan and all I can say is thank goodness. You see, when we are tempted to look down at the weeds around us we only need to remember one thing. We all started out as weeds! Thankfully, God has the wisdom to wait until the harvest to remove the weeds. Just think about where we would be if He had had us removed before someone had talked to us about Christ, before we had given our hearts to the Lord, before we had the chance to change from weeds to wheat. Whats more, we didnt get that way by hanging around other weeds. No, we learned our faith by hanging around wheat and so it is our turn now to be wheat to other weeds. My prayer this morning is that, instead of wishing we didnt have to hang out among the weeds, we spread the gospel to all around us. If we do, then the next time we look around maybe we will see more heads of wheat and less fuel for the fire.
