Here is day number 4 of my Journal. Be sure to read the first couple entries before reading on to be sure to get the beginning. I do hope you are enjoying this. Day Number Four As I was saying people in most areas are friendly and are thanking us but also asking so many “Help Me” questions I feel so bad can not do anything for them myself but I have tried to find someone who can. Just like this 14 year old boy from New Orleans came up with his mom and she up and left him poor kid almost cried on me…we had to take him to child services…he is O.K. now. ( Some where during this time frame I switched to Damage Assessment this is where we team up in cars and drive the area assigned and assess the damage to house, mobile home or apartment, Just so you know.) Today got up had a quick bite to eat, just coffee and piece of cake donated by the church that I am staying at. Got to headquarters got assignment and radio, hooked up radio…just so happens same as mine Vertex 4000 everyone was impressed! Choppers still coming and going left and right hear them all night long 24 hours around the clock…seeing lots and lots of emergency vehicles. Seen a convoy of engines (Fire Engines) so long for example we passed the first one and by the time the end came you couldn’t see a third of them, So help is here. Today seen destruction to the point that trees as big around as 4 feet toppled over houses 50 feet tall. The roots still attached to tree as big as cargo vans! Seen buildings off foundations…Got a story from a gentleman; said he came home during beginning of storm to get clothes, and high tail it out and as he left a big tree fell just where he was parked. He said and I can quote “Good Lord please hold off till I can get some things and leave.” I failed to get his name but I said “AMEN” Got back to the shelter, got word it will now become recovery after tomorrow. See an incident like this, starts out as rescue after FEMA feels that rescue efforts are no longer feasible they switch to recovery. Difference is, as most know Rescue is rescuing live people and Recovery is collecting bodies…it has been day nine going on ten and it is now time for “recovery”. To the kids of today will never know New Orleans as it was only what it is …nothing but a lake. (Note to reader: I wanted to put a sad face here but could remember how…and just so you know as of this writing they are pumping the water out now. So it will some day be like it once was.) Tomorrow going to Kenner; still West Side of Eye wall of “Katrina.” Supposed to be area of destruction never seen by general public, I am sure some have but just don’t comprehend it. So I will let you know about it if I can…Right now need to hit the HAY. Oh!!! Before I go tonight, I got my first shower since being down hear, boy it felt good.
