Here is my entry, the Great Reef Kaiju! While it’s distant cousins, the chameleons, have evolved to reside in the trees, the Great Reef Kaijus have survived unnoticed for thousands of years by becoming one with coral reefs. The gigantic beast starts it’s young life by burrowing into the sand around a reef leaving only the top of it’s back and head exposed. As it matures, coral begins to take up residence on the Kaiju’s back eventually growing into a complex ecosystem. The beast slowly absorbs radiation from the shallow sunlit waters, shares in the attached coral’s energy, and has little need to leave it’s burrow for decades. The Great Reef Kaiju has a well developed parietal eye allowing it to hide the majority of it’s face while still being able to sense movement above it. When above ground, it’s four independently moving eyes give it the ability for full sight protection as well as great depth perception. It’s tongue has developed into a powerful weapon with the ability to stun prey in it’s path with either a warning bright flash of light or a fatal strike of electricity. The giant then shoots out it’s tongue to grab the target and impale it onto it’s multiple rows of teeth. The tip of the Great Reef Kaiju’s tail also has stinging electric tentacles to whip at enemies. It’s resident coral reef appreciates the protection from sharks and other large dangers. Great Reef Kaijus have posed very little threat to humanity until recently. The behemoth is a guardian of the coral reef and senses the destruction of it’s beloved ecosystem by humans. They have so far only devoured those who make the mistake of taking coral or fish away from it’s proximity. If coral reefs continue to decline, the Great Reef Kaijus of the world will certainly rise from the seabeds and use their stored up radiation to cause as much destruction upon humanity and manmade structures as possible in an effort to bring back balance in nature.
