Hope you enjoy :) Queen Anne of Cleves Wife #4 Motto: God send me well to keep Father: John III, Duke of Cleves Mother: Maria of Julich-Berg Birthdate: September 22, 1515 Place: Dusseldorf, Cleves Religion: Catholic (She was not Lutheran) Siblings: Sybille of Cleves William, Duke of Julich-Cleves- Berg Amalia of Cleves Facts on Anne: She was the first German Queen of England Anne comes from a prestigious stock, she was descended from Edward I of England and had connection to Louis XII of France and the Duke of Burgundy. (Only Katherine of Aragon had a better pedigree among Henrys wives) She spoke only German , and her upbringing was focused more on domestic skills than intellectual attainments. However, it is known that she could read and write, and there is no indication that she was unintelligent or uneducated. She was unofficially betrothed at the age of 12 to Francios, the heir of the Duke of Lorraine , but the betrothal was never formally announced, and eventually it was considered cancel. Henry sent Hans Holbien, a famous painter, to the Duke of Cleves. Holbien was instructed to accurately paint portraits of Both Anne of Cleves and her sister Amalia of Cleves. Henry wanted to see what his potential bride looked like before he agreed to marry her. The marriage treaty between Henry and Anne of Cleves was signed 1539. Henry first met Anne in Rochester and he was apparently disappointed with her appearance. Some have said that Henry named her the *Mare of Flanders*. (Considering that it was only Henry who seemed to have complaints, there is no evidence that she as bad looking as he said she was) Anne was Known as the *Kings beloved sister* Married: January 6, 1540 Divorced: July 9, 1540 Anne survived Henry VIII, yet she remained in England and was still active in the Royal court. Her last public appearance was to attend Mary I coronation at Westminster. Anne died on July 16, 1557, age 41, she was buried in Westminster Abbey. Anne was the last of Henrys six wives to die.
