Here is my take on this study (not having read the official study, just reading this article and a second one about the same thing): To have any significance, they need to randomize which nostril is closed first. Heres what popped into my head as I read it: - I wonder how they are opening the jar? That could be an audible cue to get ready to smell the peanut butter. - Most people are right-handed. If you give them an option to close off a nostril, the first one they reach for is the right sided one (making the left nostril the first open one, and the first one tested in the study). - If you havent smelled peanut butter in a while, you may be wondering what does peanut butter smell like again? There is uncertainty in whether your are actually smelling peanut butter or if its something else. There is hesitation in determining that YES you are smelling peanut butter. Your response will be delayed. - When the test is repeated, now with the right nostril open, your brain is primed and ready to smell peanut butter. Youre going to smell it sooner than you previously did. - They should start the test by smelling the peanut butter, then take a 90 second break, THEN close a nostril (half the subjects need to start with left, the other half start with right). What do you guys think?
