Here is one of the Latin American groups I came to love when teaching world music. This stirring song is about Che Guevarra, the great and very controversial revolutionary. The group, Inti Illimani, is from Chile. They were forced to flee their country, as were many other musicians, writers and artists, under the repressive regime of Augusto Pinochet in the 1980s. This group had supported the government of Salvador Allende, a democratically elected socialist government that was overthrown with the help of the USA and replaced by Pinochet. At the end of this song, you can hear the crowd chanting, El pueblo unido, jamas sera vencido (the people united cannot be defeated). This was the rallying cry of the revolutionary forces that eventually overthrew Pinochet. There is now a socialist leaning government in Chile today, although capitalism is also alive and well. Many of the thousands of people who disappeared under Pinochet have still never been accounted for. Methinks that sometimes the US should just butt out of interfering in the governings of other countries and do a better job of taking care of things at home. We sure havent learned that lesson in Iraq and Afghanistan.
