Here is some information about Bath Bath is a city in Somerset, South West England, 97 miles (156 km) west of London and 13 miles (21 km) south-east of Bristol. In 2011, its population was 88,859. It became part of Avon in 1974; since Avons abolition in 1996, it has been the principal centre of Bath and North East Somerset. The city became a spa with the Latin name Aquae Sulis (the waters of Sulis) c. AD 60 when the Romans built baths and a temple in the valley of the River Avon, although oral tradition suggests that the hot springs were known before then. It became popular as a spa town during the Georgian era, leaving a heritage of Georgian architecture crafted from Bath Stone. Bath is in the Avon Valley near the southern edge of the Cotswolds, a range of limestone hills designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The hills that surround and make up the city have a maximum altitude of 781 feet (238 metres) on the Lansdown plateau. Bath has an area of 11 square miles (28 square kilometres. Bombed was heavily bombed during Second World War and the damage to some of the buildings was significant and required major restorations to return the buildings back to their original glory. Bath has in place a Stone Act which means that all buildings must be built using the local stone which is white initially and tuns a Honey colour of time. Bath stone is known as free stone and can be easily shaped hence the interesting designs of the buildings across Bath. There are a range of industries past and present, here are a couple: Motor Cars, Plastercine, Corsets and Dock Yard Cranes. Jane Austen lived in Bath from 1801 with her father, mother and sister Cassandra, and the family resided at four different addresses until 1806 when the death of her father revealed that there was limited funds available to the Austin family to remain in Bath and the family to another country town. Jane Austen never liked the city, and wrote to Cassandra, It will be two years tomorrow since we left Bath for Clifton, with what happy feelings of escape. Bath has honoured her name with the Jane Austen Centre and a city walk. Austens Northanger Abbey and Persuasion are set in the city and describe taking the waters, social life, and music recitals. Jane Austin will feature on the Ten Pound note in 2017. Bath was known as the English version of Vegas as the city was home to a wide range of gambling options including; How far a Sudan Chair could carry a heavy person before stopping. Another interesting piece of information I heard on my trip was quite enlightening, the term we often hear in modern times Day light robbery came from a tax introduced in Georgian times for homes owners that had dwellings with more than six uncovered windows. I hope you enjoyed the history lesson and enjoy the photos. The photos of the Jane Austin gallery are particularly for my beautiful daughters who read and re read all of the Jane Austin novels and we all had a crush on Mr Darcy!!!!!!!
