Here is some perspective from someone who lives in Russia. By Inga Leonova Letter by the great Russian poet, philosopher, translator and theologian Olga Sedakova A letter to my Ukrainian friends. All of us here in Russia who are terrified by the perspective of deadly combat in Crimea are feeling helpless. Not a single one of us has a slightest degree of power to influence on the decision-making of our government. Our government has long shut any dialogue with its opponents. Any attempts to communicate with it are fruitless. The only sense that these attempts make is that we vent our guilt, try to purify our conscience by letting them know that we do not want to be blamed for not trying. But even that is not the most bitter thing. The saddest thing is that we cannot dialogue with the great majority of our compatriots, who sincerely repeat the disgusting slanders fed to them by our official propaganda. The degree of aggression of this propaganda is just unbelievable, unheard of. It is known that the sleep of reason creates monsters. I ask you if not to forgive the people who yielded to this brainwashing, then, at least, to maintain hope that sanity and spiritual health will return to Russia. This is a necessary condition for the peace to come, the peace we ask of the Lord. I do not want to be guilty. I wish you all the best, I wish you to have a future that is truly, clearly free, the future which the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms are now trying to snatch away from you. With love and with my deepest admiration of your valor, O.S.
